Bayern downs Dortmund to claim joint-record 5th Supercup

Bayern Munich ended a run of three straight defeats in the DFL-Supercup on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over perennial rival Borussia Dortmund.

Arturo Vidal slotted in his own rebound in the 58th minute to score the match-winner, while Thomas Muller knocked in a loose ball with 11 minutes remaining to ensure manager Carlo Ancelotti's first title at the helm.

The win ties Bayern with BVB for the most in the competition's history with five.

It's also the 18th honour of Ancelotti's coaching career, which includes spells at Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid.

Traditionally a contest between the last season's Bundesliga champion and DFB-Pokal winner, the Supercup pitted domestic-double winner Bayern against Bundesliga runner-up Dortmund.

Dortmund looked the likeliest to score in the opening half, and had every right to complain about a potential penalty call in the 15th minute. Xabi Alonso handled the ball with his arm in an awkward position, but referee Tobias Welz didn't deem it worthy of a spot-kick.

Summer signing Ousmane Dembele then coaxed a fine stop out of Manuel Neuer, who looked sharp in his first competitive match since Germany's semi-final loss to France at Euro 2016.

The tide began to turn towards the end of the first half. Goalkeeper Roman Burki did what he could to keep Dortmund in the contest, collecting Vidal's header in the 38th minute.

But the Chilean got his revenge after the interval. Burki stopped Vidal's initial shot, only for the Copa America winner to bury the resulting rebound.

Muller registered the insurance tally with an opportunistic goal amidst a scene of chaos in Dortmund's area.

It was former BVB captain Mats Hummels - playing in his first match at the Westfalenstadion since his acrimonious โ‚ฌ35-million move back to Bavaria earlier this summer - who headed the ball in Muller's direction for his third Supercup goal.
