Stuttgart signs Tobias Werner from Augsburg

German midfielder Tobias Werner is making the two-hour trip northwest to Stuttgart after joining the 2. Bundesliga newboys on a three-year deal from FC Augsburg.

Stuttgart announced the move Wednesday, though neither side disclosed the fee for Werner, who appeared in just 13 Bundesliga matches last term.

The 31-year-old makes the switch from Bavaria to the Baden-Wurttemberg region and also drops a division after Die Roten were relegated in 17th place last season.

"Tobias Werner gives our squad more experience and more stability. In addition to that, he is athletic and his mentality is an absolute win for VfB," Stuttgart's sporting director Jan Schindelmeiser said Wednesday.

The move to Stuttgart provides a chance to revitalise a career that hit a wall last season. Three consecutive campaigns of no fewer than 30 league appearances culminated in a disappointing effort last season. Tissue damage in the pelvic region paired with fitness concerns sidelined Werner for extended periods.

"I am very pleased to be at VfB. There there is a great spirit of optimism here, and it is impressive how many season tickets have been sold and how many new members have joined the club," Werner said Wednesday.

"I want to help to achieve the common goals."
