Silly season is in full swing in North Yorkshire, as Premier League returnees Middlesbrough have seen a move for Borussia Dortmund centre-back Neven Subotic break down.

Subotic, 27, was poised to join Boro after eight years with Dortmund, and traveled to the club's facilities at the start of July to hammer out a deal. Those discussions have reportedly dissolved, according to Sky Sports.

The 36-time capped Serbian international's career now appears to be in footballing limbo. In June, Subotic admitted his intent to leave the club, saying, "I've come to realise over the last year that my love for football and for my active role on the pitch is too big to just follow the events from outside."

"I don't want to earn my money on the bench, but rather want to be an active part of a story, as was the case until last year," Subotic continued.

It was initially understood that a move was close, with both sides agreeing to a £8-million fee for the player who has two years left on his deal at the famed Westfalenstadion, but it appears now all for nowt.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka had hoped that Subotic would sign in time to join the club for its preseason preparations in Marbella.

It wasn't all bad news Wednesday for the club making its return to the Premier League after seven years in the second tier, as it announced a season-long loan for Valencia forward Alvaro Negredo.
