Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa will have to wait 20 days until returning to training while he nurses a hamstring concern.

Costa, 25, was already forced to miss Brazil's futile Copa America Centenario campaign before being ruled out of its Olympics in Rio and will now wait until at least the second week of August to take part in Bayern's preseason festivities, according to a statement from the team.

After a stellar debut season on the wing for the Bavarian giant, the club have been protective of its versatile star after picking up his second hamstring injury. Bayern's club chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge conceded in early July that Costa would not be released for the Olympics.

"I greatly regret this," said Rummenigge. "We all wanted Douglas to contest the Olympic Games in his home country, but the player's health and fitness takes priority."

In his first season with the club since a move from Shakhtar Donetsk, Costa was an integral part in Bayern's Bundesliga-winning campaign, netting four goals with nine assists. Slotted in on the left wing, Costa was a revelation for Pep Guardiola's lot last season, replacing the oft-injured Franck Ribery in the starting lineup for the four-time defending league champ.
