Stuttgart football has seen better days, as three clubs from the southwest Germany city were relegated Saturday.

Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart booked its place in 2. Bundesliga for the first time in four decades after finishing 19th courtesy of a 3-1 defeat at Wolfsburg.

That was just the tip of the iceberg, as the club's reserve side, Stuttgart II also suffered a 3-1 defeat, falling to Wehen Wiesbaden, to finish 20th in Germany's third tier.

Die Roten's pair of disappointments were coupled with a third, as Stuttgarter Kickers lost at home to Chemnitzer FC, finishing 18th on 43 points to join Stuttgart II in a third-division drop. Wehen Wiesbaden and Werder Bremen II both finished on 43 points, but secured safety by means of goals scored and goal differential, respectively.

Tough day in the city nicknamed the Schwabenmetropole.

On the bright side, known for its valleys and vineyards, Stuttgart's Baden-Wurttemberg region provides an ideal opportunity to hide in the hills and drown a football fan's sorrow in a bottle of dry riesling. Chin up, Stuttgart.
