Atletico downs Valladolid to extend win streak
Madrid, Spain (Sports Network) - Atletico Madrid won for the fifth straight time in all competitions on Sunday as the club recorded a 2-1 win over Valladolid at the Vicente Calderon.
Diego Godin scored a nice opening goal with a run through the middle of the defense before he finished off the play with a classy chip past goalkeeper Jaime Jimenez Merlo.
Atletico doubled its advantage shortly before halftime when Valladolid's Omar Ramos fouled Diego Costa inside the penalty area, allowing Falcao to score his fifth goal of the season from the penalty spot.
Valladolid pulled a goal back in the second half when a tame effort from Alberto Bueno somehow managed to slip past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Although the hosts were able to see out the rest of the match without too much trouble.
Mallorca 2, Valencia 0
Mallorca, Spain - Mallorca's unbeaten start in La Liga continued on Sunday with a 2-0 home win against Valencia.
Los Che were the better side for large portions of the match, but failed to make the most of its chances and have recorded only one win in five games.
Victor Casadesus scored after eight minutes for Mallorca with a shot that managed to slip underneath Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves.
The visitors came close to equalizing before the break when a header from Nelson Valdez hit the crossbar.
However, Mallorca secured the win in the 55th minute with a volley from Javier Arizmendi.
Levante 2, Real Sociedad 1
Valencia, Spain - Obafemi Martins scored the winning goal in the 86th minute on his Levante debut to give the club a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad on Sunday.
David Zurutuza scored midway through the first half for Sociedad, but his opener was canceled out by a penalty kick from Levante's Jose Barkero 20 minutes from time.
Martins only completed his move to Levante from Russian side Rubin on Friday, but he came off the bench at halftime to spark the win by scoring on a low shot from inside the area.
Athletic Bilbao 0, Malaga 0
Bilbao, Spain - Malaga and Athletic Bilbao played out a 0-0 draw at the San Mames on Sunday in a match that saw neither side produce much in the way of chances.
Malaga entered the contest having won three of its four games in La Liga and was coming off of a win over Zenit in the Champions League in midweek.
But the visitors failed to hit those heights on Sunday and the best chance they could muster was a powerful long-range effort from Eliseu which was kept out by a diving stop from goalkeeper Raul.
Athletic also lacked any punch on offense and the closest the home side came to finding the net was a shot from a tight angle by Aritz Aduriz which hit the side of the net.
