Hummels signs new long-term deal with Dortmund

Dortmund, Germany (Sports Network) - Germany defender Mats Hummels signed a new long-term deal Sunday through the 2016-17 season with two-time defending Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund.

The 23-year-old Hummels had two years remaining on his previous contract, but the former Bayern Munich man "was sure right away that I wanted to continue to be a part of a team has been so successful" when approached about a new deal.

"We are delighted that an absolute key player like Mats Hummels has signed a new long-term deal. This underlines the huge attraction of Borussia Dortmund," Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.

In addition to being an anchor for Dortmund, Hummels has been capped 14 times for Germany and is part of the Euro 2012 squad.

"Mats Hummels could have moved to almost any club in Europe, but he has chosen Borussia Dortmund. This is a fantastic story," Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp said.
