PHOTOS: U.S. Open champ Marin Cilic gets a rousing reception in hometown of Medjugorje

Fresh off the madness of a surprise U.S. Open title, and the ensuing American media tour, Marin Cilic returned to his hometown of Medjugorje, in Bosnia and Herzegovina (born to Bosnian Croats, Cilic identifies as Croatian).

Medjugorje is home to just over 4,000 people, and from the looks of it, the whole town turned out to celebrate its newly-minted Grand Slam tennis champion.

You might also note that Cilic was gifted a painting of himself, holding his U.S. Open trophy, in front of what appears to be an image of the Virgin Mary, a figure with whom Cilic's hometown is extensively linked.

With the landmark win, the 25-year-old Cilic became just the second Croatian to capture a Grand Slam title (the other being his current coach, Goran Ivanisevic) and equaled his career-best world ranking of No. 9.
