Rafael Nadal's bid for a 10th French Open title has come to a sudden end.

Nadal announced Friday he's withdrawing from Roland Garros because of a wrist injury. The Spaniard admitted he'd be putting himself at risk if he continued playing.

"It's not broken, but if I keep playing it's going to be broken," he said. "We tried our best. We took risks"

Things got progressively worse for Nadal as the tournament wore on.

"There is no chance I can even practice today," he added. "This is a very bad position for me. It's part of the life."

It isn't the first time Nadal has dealt with wrist issues. A similar ailment forced him out of the 2014 US Open. The 29-year-old was cruising at this year's event, which makes the abrupt exit particularly disappointing. He won his first-round matchup 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 and his second-round victory came at 6-3, 6-0, 6-3.

The draw is now wide open, as Marcel Granollers automatically advances into the fourth round, and a potential semifinal showdown between Novak Djokovic and Nadal is off.
